Serbian President Seeks Resolution Amid Ongoing Student Protests
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has called on the Rectorate of the University of Belgrade to begin a dialogue on Wednesday to resolve the ongoing blockade of classes at higher education institutions.
Vučić emphasized that his appeal is made for the benefit of not only students but also society as a whole, according to Radio Television of Serbia.
“I invite the Rectorate, along with other relevant institutions and representatives of the academic community, to initiate discussions that will lead to a solution to the ongoing class disruptions,” Vučić stated.
The ongoing blockades have resulted in the suspension of lectures, exercises, exams, and other academic activities at universities across the country.
“Recognizing that the Expanded Rectorate supported the student protests in its December 10 statement, I am certain that you are aware that this prolonged situation harms not only the educational process and students but also the development of education, science, and society as a whole,” Vučić added.
He acknowledged that if students and faculty believe some demands remain unmet or are only partially fulfilled, an open dialogue is necessary to address these concerns and find solutions.
“I am convinced that only through dialogue can we collectively determine whether student demands have been met and to what extent, while outlining the necessary steps to address their concerns effectively,” Vučić stated.
He assured that relevant institutions are willing to work around the clock to fulfill student demands and called for participation in discussions for the greater good of the university, students, and professors.
“I expect you to respond to this call, which is primarily directed toward ensuring the well-being of the University, students, and faculty, while respecting everyone’s right to express their opinions on matters of public and social significance,” Vučić concluded.
