The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, met with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Jim O’Brien, during which he requested that the United States refrain from imposing sanctions on the Serbian Oil Industry (NIS), which is predominantly owned by Russia’s Gazprom.
Vučić expressed concern, noting that he is aware the U.S. may impose sanctions on NIS starting January 1st of the coming year, as the company’s profits have been channeled into funding Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
“One of the key topics discussed was the issue of NIS and the potential consequences that U.S. sanctions could have on Serbia’s economy and its citizens, especially in light of the ongoing global energy crisis,” Vučić wrote on Facebook.
