President Vjosa Osmani has responded to recent remarks made by her Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vučić, who claimed that “everyone is preparing for war.”

In a statement published by the Presidency of Kosovo on X, Osmani described Vučić’s “reckless calls for war” as a dangerous echo of the darkest chapters of recent history, Klankosova.tv reports.

Despite years of tireless U.S. and European efforts to build lasting peace, Osmani said, Vučić is showing the world that he has rejected the path of reconciliation.

“Instead of turning the page, Vučić and his regime are once again flirting with the same destructive fantasies that once took countless innocent lives,” the statement reads.

Osmani recalled that similar rhetoric was heard in the 1990s, when Slobodan Milošević chose genocidal wars as his final instrument of power.

“He spread inhuman violence in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and finally in Kosovo — all meticulously documented for the world to see. Through his propaganda machine, with Vučić as his propaganda chief, he fueled hatred that led to systematic killings, mass graves, destruction, and Serbia’s deepest isolation. His power ended in disgrace — overthrown by his own people, judged as a war criminal, and remembered as the man who led his nation to ruin and as the butcher of the Balkans,” the statement continues.

The Presidency’s statement further warns that Vučić now appears to believe he can revive the same toxic formula — inciting conflict, gambling with human lives, and betting that bloodshed will preserve his rule.

“But history is clear and unforgiving. Milošević failed — and Vučić will fail too.”

“War is not a tool of leadership. It is the last refuge of those who have lost legitimacy, who cannot inspire with vision, and who see no path forward except through destruction,” the statement concludes.

Osmani reaffirmed that Kosovo has chosen peace — “a peace that we will defend at all costs.”
