In February this year, German FAZ journalist Michael Martens analyzed the statements and admiration expressed by Serbian President Aleksander Vučić for Azerbaijan’s approach to the Nagorno-Karabakh region, warning the EU that Vučić might have similar projections for Kosovo.
Martens highlighted how Vučić, in an interview, praised Azerbaijan’s leader Ilham Aliyev for waiting years to create favorable conditions to reclaim Nagorno-Karabakh.
This topic, along with Vučić’s admiration for Aliyev’s methods and strategy, was also discussed today at the Dubrovnik Forum. Assistant Secretary of State James O’Brien stated that Vučić’s interpretation is incorrect, as Aliyev aimed to reclaim territories internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan.
O’Brien also warned against any movements in Bosnia or Kosovo.
“We need to be clear: No movements in Bosnia, no movements in northern Kosovo,” O’Brien declared.
In the past, American officials have also warned against the use of force to resolve disputes in the Western Balkans region. Meanwhile, officials in Kosovo, including President Vjosa Osmani and Prime Minister Albin Kurti, have repeatedly stated that Serbia has territorial ambitions towards Kosovo.
