The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) has rejected a request for early release filed by Mico Stanišić, the former Minister of Internal Affairs of the self-proclaimed Republika Srpska.

According to the decision, conditions for granting early release have not been met.

Stanišić was sentenced to 22 years in prison for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992. He was found guilty of participating in a joint criminal enterprise (JCE) aimed at the permanent removal of Bosniaks, Croats, and other non-Serb populations from areas intended to form part of a “planned Serbian state” within Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The IRMCT’s refusal reinforces the tribunal’s continued stance on the gravity of crimes committed during the Bosnian War, particularly ethnic cleansing campaigns, and highlights that early release is not guaranteed, even after lengthy sentences have been served.
