Thousands of citizens took to the streets of Sarajevo on Saturday, demanding transparency and accountability in the investigation of the tragic tram accident that occurred on February 12, 2026, which claimed the life of 23-year-old Erdoan Morankić and left several others injured.
The protest, held for the seventh time since the accident, began in front of the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, near the site of the incident, and concluded at the Cantonal Prosecutor’s Office. Demonstrators, many of them young people and students, carried banners and chanted: “We want truth and justice.”
Parents of victims addressed the crowd, expressing their frustration over the lack of accountability and demanding that authorities determine who is responsible for the tragedy.
The protesters were joined by students from the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo, mourning the loss of their colleague, Erdoan Morankić, and calling for an independent and transparent investigation.
According to the Cantonal Prosecutor’s Office of Sarajevo, there is no video recording from the tram cabin, as forensic analysis of the hard drive extracted from the tram revealed no recorded material since November 29, 2025. Authorities are investigating why the video surveillance system did not function properly at the time of the accident.
Investigators have also been reviewing technical documentation of tram number 516, which was involved in the crash, as well as documents related to other Czech-made trams and personnel files from the Sarajevo Public Transport Company (GRAS).
So far, the Prosecutor’s Office has interviewed 30 witnesses and collected 10 surveillance recordings from nearby buildings. While authorities suspect that the tram driver may have committed the criminal offense of endangering public traffic through negligence resulting in death, the Cantonal Court of Sarajevo denied the request for his detention, and he has been released. The driver maintains he is not guilty, attributing the accident to technical failure, a position supported by the GRAS union.
The accident has already prompted significant political fallout, with Sarajevo Canton Prime Minister Nihad Uk and GRAS Director Senad Mujakić resigning in the days following the tragedy.
Citizens continue to demand that the investigation be conducted independently and without interference, emphasizing the need for justice for Erdoan Morankić and transparency in public institutions.
