Some expect greater involvement from U.S. President Donald Trump and his team in the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, while others believe it is still too early to say whether the United States will adopt a new approach in the dialogue.

The course of the dialogue under the new U.S. administration remains unclear.

Former diplomat Blerim Canaj says that the role of the U.S. in the dialogue will depend on the relationship that develops between Trump’s administration and official Brussels.

According to Canaj, if there is an interest from the U.S. to be involved in the dialogue, the European Union will be forced to align with their position on the process.

However, he states that this will also depend on who will govern Kosovo after the February 9 elections and how the official relations with the U.S. will develop.

“The European Union will be forced to align with the United States. Donald Trump’s cabinet, particularly the Republicans, are not like the Democrats, who ‘pull back and don’t take action,’ but they know how to cut things quickly and, naturally, according to need… It’s very important who will govern Kosovo. It’s important what communication will exist between Kosovo and the U.S. I don’t rule out the possibility that Donald Trump and Richard Grenell will say, ‘We’ll continue where we left off in 2019,’” he emphasizes for RTV21.
