Former President of Montenegro, Milo Đukanović, has informed Montenegrin authorities that he received information about an assassination plot against him.
Late on Friday, Montenegrin police stated that there is no evidence indicating Đukanović’s security is at risk. The National Security Agency has not commented, according to vijesti.me.
“The former president received the aforementioned information from several international officials from the intelligence community and has informed state authorities with that information,” stated Đukanović’s office in a response to “Vijesti.”
The office did not respond to whom and when Đukanović received this information.
A source close to Đukanović said that a senior foreign military official in Kosovo informed him that an organized criminal group from a neighboring country is suspected of planning an assassination, in collaboration with the security services of another neighboring country.
“According to Article 18 of the Law on the President of Montenegro, upon the end of his term, the president is entitled to permanent personal security in accordance with the security assessment determined by the competent authority, in accordance with the law. The National Security Agency is responsible for preparing security threat assessment reports,” the police stated.
In response to the question of whether Đukanović’s security has been increased, his office reported that it has been reduced.
“Security changes during that period have occurred to such an extent that security at the former president’s residence was removed during the day shift,” the office reported.
They also emphasized that Montenegrin security services have not called Đukanović or his security coordinator for an interview to point out the potential risk.
“There has been no initiative for a conversation from the representatives of the security services,” Đukanović’s office stated.
