Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. Army veteran and American citizen from Texas, has been identified by the FBI as the primary suspect in the Wednesday shooting rampage in New Orleans that left 10 people dead.
The 42-year-old Jabbar served in various roles within the U.S. military, including human resources and IT, before being discharged. He was deployed to Afghanistan from February 2009 to January 2010. Jabbar pursued higher education at Georgia State University from 2015 to 2017, where he graduated with a degree in computer information systems.
Jabbar had been married twice. His first marriage ended in 2012, while his second marriage lasted from 2017 to 2022.
He was reported to have worked in real estate, though his real estate license expired in 2021. Jabbar had a criminal record, including traffic offenses and theft charges.
A flag associated with the terrorist group ISIS was found in the vehicle Jabbar was driving, and the FBI has stated that they are investigating potential connections between Jabbar and terrorist organizations, according to the BBC.
