The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that nearly 42,000 Palestinians in Gaza have sustained injuries that could change their lives forever, with approximately one-quarter of the victims being children, according to Rik Peeperkorn, WHO representative for the occupied Palestinian territories.
“Since October 2023, WHO has recorded a total of 167,000 injured individuals in Gaza, consistent with previous estimates,” Peeperkorn told reporters during a UN briefing.
Alarming Statistics on Injuries
- More than 5,000 Palestinians have suffered amputations.
- Around 22,000 injuries have been recorded in arms and legs.
- Over 2,000 spinal cord injuries and 1,300 brain injuries have also been documented.
Peeperkorn emphasized that the healthcare system in Gaza is on the brink of collapse, with fewer than 14 out of 36 hospitals remaining minimally functional.
“You cannot even call it a trauma ward anymore,” he said, noting that over 90% of Al-Shifa Hospital staff have fled during the current Israeli offensive in Gaza City.
Severe Shortages of Medical Supplies
The WHO is also facing a rapid decline in essential medical supplies, including bandages, blood components, and transfusion bags.
“WHO has secured these supplies, but we are struggling to deliver them because many entry points are currently closed,” Peeperkorn added.
The report underscores the urgent need for international support to address both the medical emergency and the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
