Olena Zelenska, the First Lady of Ukraine, wrote a letter to Melania Trump to thank her for raising awareness about the issue of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia. The letter was personally delivered by President Volodymyr Zelensky during his meeting with Donald Trump.

Zelenska’s letter was a response to a previous action by Melania Trump, who had sent a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin urging him to consider the fate of these children. In her letter, Melania Trump wrote that “by protecting the innocence of these children, you serve humanity,” according to BBC.

The main reasons for this correspondence were:

  • Olena Zelenska deeply appreciated Melania Trump’s “awareness” and “compassion” regarding one of the “most painful issues of this war.”
  • By openly expressing her concern, Melania Trump raised this issue at an international level, drawing the attention of leaders and the public.

Through the letter, Zelenska emphasized that Melania Trump’s voice “matters” and “strengthens this cause.”

The return of the children is one of the key points of Ukraine’s position in peace negotiations, and any action supporting this cause is highly valued.

This exchange of letters comes at a time when the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin on charges of the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children.
