Delvinë, Albania – July 28, 2025

A massive wildfire has engulfed the southern Albanian village of Kalasa, in the Delvinë administrative unit, prompting emergency evacuations as flames fueled by strong winds approach residential areas.

The situation has escalated rapidly, forcing local authorities to evacuate hundreds of residents in order to prevent casualties and protect homes threatened by the advancing blaze.

Firefighting teams from Delvinë and Saranda, units from the Albanian Armed Forces, and crews from the Civil Emergencies Support Base have been deployed on the ground. A Black Hawk helicopter has also been engaged for aerial firefighting operations.

On site to oversee and coordinate the emergency response are Defense Minister Pirro Vengu and Mayor of Delvinë, Besmir Veli.

The severity of the fire has drawn international attention, particularly after NASA released satellite imagery capturing the wildfire activity across southern Albania, including the large fire near Delvinë that has led to the evacuation of more than 2,000 people.

Authorities continue to work around the clock to contain the flames and prevent further spread. Firefighters remain on high alert as weather conditions — especially wind — remain unfavorable.
