Members of the Serbian community in Kosovo have two more days to convert their Serbian-issued driver’s licenses to those issued by the Kosovo authorities.
If they do not complete the conversion by August 9, and if they are stopped by the police while driving, they will be considered to be driving without a valid driver’s license.
According to statistics from the Kosovo Police, today 106 driver’s licenses were issued in Leposavić, 51 in North Mitrovica, 48 in Zvečan, 33 in Zubin Potok, and 12 in Gračanica. From May 10 until August 7, the total number of converted licenses has reached 5,588.
Veton Elshani, Deputy Director of Police for the northern region, told RTK that the process is proceeding well, but some citizens have encountered difficulties and technical issues.
For this reason, Elshani mentioned that a request will be made to the Ministry of Internal Affairs to allow an extension of the deadline by another five to ten working days.
“We have requested from the Ministry of Internal Affairs that both the license plates and the vehicle registrations be converted. The process of converting license plates has been completed, while the conversion of driver’s licenses is still ongoing.
We are encountering some technical problems and people are facing these issues. For example, if someone has a technical issue like a driving ban for three months, this ban extends beyond August 9. We will see if we can submit a request to the Ministry of Internal Affairs to allow for an extension of five to ten working days due to these difficulties,” Elshani stated.
According to the law, the fines for driving without a valid driver’s license range from 500 to 1,500 euros.
