Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka credited his team’s collective effort as the main reason behind their positive results.

Sunderland secured an important 0-1 away victory against Nottingham Forest, with Xhaka himself providing the assist for the winning goal.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, the Albanian midfielder admitted that the hosts had been the better side but stressed the importance of scoring and team mentality.

“We had a game plan and we knew it was going to be very difficult here. But what a mentality from the team! That’s what we need, what support from the fans. Nottingham Forest were better today, but it doesn’t matter who is better on the pitch, what matters is who scores more,” said Xhaka.

He also discussed why he chose Sunderland and his role within the squad:

“It’s the project. They brought me here for my experience, leadership, and what I can bring to the team. I’m showing it day by day, week by week, the professionalism needed at this level. Even at my age, we still run and fight.”

Xhaka further underlined the importance of training and preparation:

“There’s still a lot more to come. We’re working hard on set-pieces, we know how important they are, and we did it again today. It’s not just the players, the staff are also helping us a lot with analysis and meetings.”
