Switzerland’s head coach, Murat Yakin, has made it clear that his team will only aim for victory in their opening World Cup 2026 qualifier against Kosovo on Friday night at St. Jakob-Park, Basel.
With the stands expected to be evenly divided – around 50% Swiss and 50% Kosovar fans – Yakin underlined the seriousness of the clash:
“When we played a friendly against Kosovo in March 2022, people called it a brotherhood duel. That won’t be the case this time,” Yakin said.
Focus on a Strong Start
Yakin emphasized that the first two home matches – against Kosovo and Slovenia – are crucial to secure a solid start in the group stage. Despite fluctuations in the form of key players such as Breel Embolo and Manuel Akanji, Yakin remains optimistic:
“The week has gone well. Everyone is ready and in good shape,” he noted.
Offensive Hopes on Dan Ndoye
In attack, much of the spotlight falls on Dan Ndoye, the young forward who has impressed after moving from Bologna to Nottingham Forest.
“I accept the responsibility and will help the team with my qualities, but I’ll remain the same Dan,” said Ndoye.
A Real Challenge Ahead
Yakin stressed the importance of a sharp beginning, recognizing the competitiveness of the group:
“Football moves fast and the group is tough, but preparations have been excellent. Now everything must be translated into the game,” he added.
After facing Switzerland, Kosovo will host Sweden in Prishtina, while Slovenia also features in the same group.
