Yulia Svyrydenko, the 39-year-old economist and former First Deputy Prime Minister, has been confirmed by the Ukrainian parliament as the new Prime Minister of Ukraine, lawmakers announced today.
Svyrydenko played a key role in negotiations with the United States regarding the rare minerals agreement. According to Reuters, “her nomination sends a clear message to Washington that Kyiv prioritizes relations.”
She replaces Denys Shmyhal, who served as Prime Minister for five years, marking the longest tenure in Ukraine’s history. The outgoing Prime Minister is expected to assume a new cabinet position as Minister of Defense, replacing the current minister, Rustem Umerov.
