KYIV, Ukraine – August 16, 2025 – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that he will hold a face-to-face meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday in Washington, D.C., to discuss the war in Ukraine. The announcement follows a long phone call between the two leaders after the Trump-Putin summit in Alaska.

A “Long and Substantive” Phone Call

Zelensky described the phone call as a “long and substantive” discussion that lasted more than an hour and a half. The conversation began as a one-on-one talk between the two presidents for about an hour before expanding to include European and NATO leaders. During the call, Trump briefed Zelensky on the key points of his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Ukrainian president welcomed Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia, stating that this format is “convenient.” He also stressed the importance of involving European countries at all stages of the process to ensure reliable security guarantees in cooperation with the United States.

Upcoming Meeting in Washington
