Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that at least 155 Chinese nationals are fighting on Russia’s side in the war in Ukraine, raising concerns about the involvement of foreign citizens in the conflict.
His comments came after two Chinese fighters were captured earlier this week, marking the first time Kyiv has made an official accusation against China for sending personnel to fight alongside Russian forces.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Zelensky said that the real number could be even higher, citing intelligence gathered by Ukrainian authorities.
“There are many more,” he said, without providing further details.
On the other hand, China has previously denied that its citizens are participating in the conflict, calling such claims “unfounded.” Beijing has not yet issued an official response to the number mentioned by Zelensky.
On Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that Chinese authorities are “verifying the relevant situation with Ukraine,” and suggested that any involvement may have occurred in a private capacity.
“Let me stress that the Chinese government always advises its citizens to stay away from conflict zones, avoid any form of involvement in armed conflict, and in particular refrain from participating in military operations of any party,” Lin said.
He also urged Ukraine to acknowledge China’s efforts toward a peaceful resolution of the war.
“We call on Ukraine to view China’s efforts and constructive role in finding a political solution to the crisis in Ukraine objectively,” the Chinese spokesperson emphasized.
