President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed the completion of the first phase of a large-scale prisoner exchange agreement with Russia, reached during high-level talks in Istanbul. This marks a significant step in ongoing diplomatic efforts to bring home Ukrainian captives.
According to Zelensky, 390 prisoners from both sides were released today, with further exchanges expected to continue throughout the weekend. The deal, known as the “1000 for 1000” prisoner swap agreement, is crucial for humanitarian reasons and the morale of the Ukrainian people.
“We are bringing our people home. The first phase of the ‘1000 for 1000’ exchange agreement has been completed. This agreement was reached during the meeting in Turkey and it is very important that it is fully implemented,” Zelensky stated during his address.
He extended his gratitude to everyone working tirelessly to facilitate the exchange, emphasizing the importance of returning all Ukrainians still held captive. “We are verifying every name and detail for each person. We will continue diplomatic efforts to make this process possible,” Zelensky added.
This exchange is part of broader negotiations aimed at easing tensions and achieving humanitarian progress amid the ongoing conflict.
