Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced today that he met with CIA Director William Burns in Ukraine, marking a significant moment amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. Zelensky shared the news through a Telegram message, revealing that this was Burns’ final visit to Ukraine in his capacity as CIA Director.
“We’ve had numerous meetings throughout the course of this war, and I am grateful for his assistance,” said Zelensky. He added that many of their discussions have remained private, with little information released to the public. “These meetings took place without official announcements, whether in Ukraine, other European countries, the U.S., or elsewhere.”
As the United States remains Ukraine’s largest financial and military supporter in the war that began nearly three years ago, Washington has been instrumental in providing vital intelligence. U.S. military intelligence, shared with Ukraine, has been crucial in supporting the country’s defense against Russian aggression.
Burns, who has played a key role in fostering U.S.-Ukraine intelligence cooperation, is expected to step down as CIA Director following the expected inauguration of Republican President Donald Trump in January 2025.
This meeting further highlights the close relationship between the two countries as Ukraine continues to rely on international support in its defense efforts.
