Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin personally fears a ceasefire, as returning to full-scale war after a pause would be extremely difficult for the Kremlin.
“It is not easy for them to move from a full-scale war to a ceasefire and then return to full-scale war. It is economically difficult, socially difficult, and hard to make the world accept it. And certainly difficult with those countries that are still engaging with Putin today. That is why, for now, he chooses war,” Zelensky explained.
The Ukrainian leader stressed that a ceasefire is possible but requires increased pressure on Russia.
“Pressure will work when they lose more in the war than they would in other scenarios. Our long-range strikes, strong sanctions, maintaining our positions on the battlefield, self-defense—and, of course, supporting peace initiatives because it is the right thing to do—all of this will work,” Zelensky added.
Zelensky also announced that Ukraine plans to nominate U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize if he succeeds in stopping Russia’s military actions against Ukraine.
