Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated that Ukraine is prepared for genuine compromises in potential peace negotiations with Russia, even as skepticism persists over Russian President Vladimir Putin’s intentions.

Speaking to Japan’s Kyodo News, Zelensky emphasized that Kyiv has repeatedly refused ultimatums from Russia but remains open to discussions that respect Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Staying where we stand is already a major compromise,” Zelensky said, effectively confirming reports that Ukraine has offered to freeze current frontlines as part of any agreement.

He added: “They have taken almost 20% of our territory, and we are ready to talk about peace at this moment. We are willing to make real compromises, but not at the cost of our independence and sovereignty.

Zelensky stressed that any compromise must safeguard Ukraine’s territorial integrity, its armed forces, and its citizens, rejecting any measures framed as ultimatums. “This is why I said: we are open to compromises that respect our sovereignty and integrity, but we will not accept ultimatums. They are the aggressors. Everyone knows that,” he said.

The Ukrainian leader’s comments underline Kyiv’s willingness to negotiate while maintaining firm principles, signaling a cautious but pragmatic approach to ending the war.
