Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron following Russia’s largest air assault on Ukraine.
“We are coordinating our diplomatic efforts, next steps, and contacts with our partners to ensure an appropriate response,” Zelensky wrote on Telegram.
The attack set fire to the building housing Ukraine’s government headquarters in Kyiv, killing at least five people, including three in the capital.
“For the first time since the outbreak of war in February 2022, the roof and upper floors of the government building were damaged by enemy fire,” said Prime Minister Yulia Svirydenko on Telegram, sharing photos that showed visible flames from windows and a helicopter dropping water.
The assault comes as U.S. President Donald Trump’s diplomatic efforts to negotiate an end to the war appear to have stalled in recent days, leaving much of Ukraine on high alert overnight.
Kyiv was struck by a drone barrage, which killed three people—an elderly woman, a young woman, and a small girl—and injured 18 others, according to emergency services.
Several other buildings in the capital were also damaged in the overnight raids.
