Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his “deep gratitude” to former U.S. President Donald Trump for his “strong determination to end the war with Russia” after a meeting with the newly elected American president in Paris. French President Emmanuel Macron hosted the Zelensky-Trump talks at the Élysée Palace on Saturday.

“The most important thing is that we work together to end this war; it is our top priority. At the meeting in Paris, we focused precisely on this,” Zelensky wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“I repeat my gratitude to President Macron for organizing this meeting, as well as my deep gratitude to President Trump for his strong resolve to bring this war to a fair end,” the Ukrainian leader added.

Trump previously stated that, if elected, he would end the Russia-Ukraine conflict “within 24 hours” of taking office, a claim that sparked concern in Ukraine, which fears being forced into significant territorial concessions to Russia in exchange for peace.

On Sunday, Trump called for an “immediate ceasefire,” writing on his social media platform, Truth Social, that Zelensky was ready to “strike a deal and end this madness.”
