Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that any attempt to end the war by dividing Ukraine would be a “dangerous illusion,” drawing historical parallels to failed European appeasement policies before World War II.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Zelensky said proposals suggesting territorial concessions to Russia would not bring peace but instead risk prolonging instability across Europe.

“It would be an illusion to believe that this war can end by dividing Ukraine, just as it was an illusion to believe that sacrificing Czechoslovakia would save Europe from a major war,” Zelensky said, referring to the Munich Agreement that enabled Nazi Germany to annex parts of Czechoslovakia before expanding further.

Zelensky also criticized European powers for not being sufficiently present at peace negotiation efforts, suggesting that the continent must play a stronger role in shaping any future settlement.

The Ukrainian leader further argued that Kyiv had exhausted diplomatic efforts to prevent the conflict, claiming that previous international responses, including from earlier U.S. administrations, did not provide adequate deterrence.

Despite the criticism, Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine remains open to a peace agreement, but only one that guarantees security for Ukraine and the broader European region. He also called for expanded support in energy infrastructure, additional missile defense systems, and accelerated integration into the European Union.

Analysts note that Zelensky’s remarks reflect growing concerns in Kyiv that pressure for territorial compromise could emerge amid prolonged warfare, while Ukraine continues to push for sustained Western military and economic backing.
