Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged world leaders to be cautious, warning them not to trust Russian President Vladimir Putin’s claims of willingness to end the war.
His remarks come after a high-stakes phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Putin, reportedly aimed at initiating peace talks.
Zelensky Calls for a United Front Against Russia
In a social media statement following a conversation with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Zelensky emphasized that:
“No negotiations with Putin should begin without a unified stance from Ukraine, Europe, and the U.S.”
Zelensky and Tusk discussed the conditions necessary for a lasting and real peace in Ukraine. The Ukrainian leader also briefed Tusk on his conversation with Trump, stressing the need for Europe to align its positions to achieve successful outcomes for the continent as a whole.
NATO Membership and Defense Investment as Key Guarantees
Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine must negotiate from a position of strength, ensuring strong and credible security guarantees. He highlighted:
- NATO membership as the most effective security assurance for Ukraine.
- Major investments in Ukraine’s defense industry as another essential measure.
Finally, he cautioned global leaders against taking Putin’s peace claims at face value, stating that Russia’s actions continue to contradict any genuine intent for peace.
With diplomatic efforts gaining momentum, the world watches closely to see how Ukraine, Europe, and the U.S. navigate the next phase of the conflict.
