Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a stark warning that Russia may attack a NATO country within the next five years as a way to test the alliance’s unity and response.
In an interview with Sky News, Zelensky was asked whether such an attack could come within months. He replied that he does not believe Vladimir Putin is ready just yet. However, he stressed that the threat is real and growing.
Zelensky criticized NATO’s defense spending plans, calling the current timeline “too slow.” NATO countries have proposed raising defense budgets to 5% of GDP by 2035, but Zelensky said that’s not soon enough.
“We believe that starting from 2030, Putin may have significantly greater capabilities. Today, Ukraine is holding him back – he doesn’t have time to train his army,” Zelensky said.
He went on to emphasize the intensity of current battles:
“Russian soldiers are being destroyed and eliminated on the battlefield. However, Putin needs a pause. He wants sanctions lifted and a retrained military.”
Zelensky’s remarks highlight the urgency he sees in increasing Western support for Ukraine and maintaining pressure on the Kremlin.
