BERLIN, Germany – August 13, 2025 – A video conference call between U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and other European leaders has concluded ahead of a planned meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Leaders Discuss Path to Peace

At a joint press conference in Berlin following the talks, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and President Zelenskyy revealed what was discussed. Merz stated that the path forward is a “ceasefire first, then a framework agreement.” He emphasized that Ukraine’s security was guaranteed by the upcoming “Alaska summit” between the U.S. and Russia, adding that “Ukraine must have a seat at the negotiation table.”

Merz expressed his belief that President Trump shares the European leaders’ concerns and is hopeful for progress. “We wish Trump all the best for the summit with Putin,” the chancellor said.

President Zelenskyy echoed the sentiment, stating that he and Trump had agreed on the principles of peace. He stressed the importance of discussing all matters concerning Ukraine with Ukraine directly, asserting that Russia should not have the final say on border issues.

French President Emmanuel Macron also spoke, confirming that Trump’s goal is to secure a ceasefire with Putin. Macron added that Trump said any territorial exchange must be negotiated by Ukraine. He underscored the importance of Europe’s voice being heard before the Alaska summit.
