The Green-Left Front (ZLF) has urged government officials, the police, and media outlets not to exploit the death of a student at the University of Belgrade’s Faculty of Philosophy for political purposes, and to approach the case “with maximum responsibility and respect for the victim and her family.”

The opposition party also criticized the decision to hold a parliamentary Education Committee session the day after the tragedy, focusing on “State Universities,” calling it the start of renewed pressure on universities—especially following Education Minister Dejan Vuka Stanković’s remarks on redefining university autonomy.

“In a society that has faced numerous losses in recent years, the sensationalism of pro-government media and public figures close to the regime in this case is very dangerous,” ZLF said.

The party emphasized that society has a duty to protect the most vulnerable, seek justice, and show solidarity, while condemning those who profit from the misfortune of others. “We must show restraint and respect the human dignity and privacy of those going through the hardest moments,” ZLF added.

The tragedy occurred at the Faculty of Philosophy’s plaza when, according to the Belgrade Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office, several spray cans and firecrackers were ignited on the fifth floor of the building, after which the student jumped from a window and died. The victim was 25 years old.
