A Danish court ordered a 12-day prison sentence for the attacker of Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Saturday afternoon, reported the state broadcaster DR.

Copenhagen police charged the 39-year-old Polish man under section 119(1) of the Danish Penal Code for violence and threats of assault against a person in public service or office during a hearing at the Frederiksberg Court.

The charge stated that the man pushed the prime minister off course by punching her in the right arm.

During the preliminary hearing, the accused was accompanied by a translator who translated the proceedings into Polish.

According to the arrest report, there is a possibility that the accused was under the influence during the incident, as he was disoriented, lethargic, and mumbling at the time of his arrest.

The report stated that the 39-year-old recognized the prime minister through social media.

In the preliminary hearing, the accused pleaded not guilty and said he was “pleasantly surprised” when he saw the prime minister and denied any ill will towards her, adding that he thinks she is “a really good prime minister.”

The accused said he does not remember much of the episode and was at the scene to enjoy Friday evening.

Copenhagen police, after the hearing, said they found no political motive behind the attack and called it “a spontaneous act.”
