Eighteen paramilitary soldiers and 12 militants were killed in clashes in southwestern Pakistan, the military’s media wing said in a statement on Saturday.
The militants had attempted to set up roadblocks overnight in the restive province of Balochistan, and the deaths occurred after security forces pushed them back, the army said.
It was not immediately clear to which group the militants belonged.
The resource-rich province, which borders Iran and Afghanistan, has been the scene of a decade-long insurgency by Baloch separatist groups, with Islamist militants also operating there.
On Tuesday, in a separate incident, Islamist militants in a vehicle packed with explosives were thwarted in their attempt to breach a Pakistani security post near the Afghan border.
In August, at least 73 people were killed in Balochistan when separatist militants attacked police stations, railway lines, and highways, prompting retaliatory security operations, Reuters reported.
