Lebanese authorities have arrested 25 suspects in connection with the attack on a United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) convoy, which resulted in the torching of one of its vehicles near Beirut’s airport, Interior Minister General Ahmad Al Hajar announced on Friday.
The attack, which left a UNIFIL deputy commander injured, occurred amid protests by Hezbollah supporters against the Lebanese government’s decision to ban the landing of two Iranian passenger planes.
Following an emergency security meeting, Minister Al Hajar stated that the arrests do not necessarily confirm the involvement of those detained, emphasizing that the ongoing investigation will determine the perpetrators behind the assault.
UNIFIL, deployed in southern Lebanon since 1978, plays a crucial role in maintaining stability along the country’s border with Israel. The recent attack raises concerns about escalating tensions in the region, especially given the increasing influence of Hezbollah and its ties to Iran.
