Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has urged the international community to isolate Russia from the nuclear energy sector following a drone attack on the protective structure above the fourth reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Kyiv is calling for Russia’s exclusion from leadership positions in international nuclear organizations.
The Ukrainian Embassy in Belgrade relayed the ministry’s statement, demanding immediate action to hold Russia accountable for what it describes as acts of “nuclear terrorism.”
The attack, which took place on the night of February 13-14, sparked a fire at the facility. Ukrainian officials condemned it as a serious escalation, warning that any strike on Chernobyl is not only an attack on Ukraine but a threat to global nuclear security.
The statement also highlighted Russia’s continued occupation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, where thousands of Ukrainian workers are forced to prevent a potential catastrophe under conditions of “occupation and terror.”
Ukraine will raise the issue of Russian threats to global nuclear security at the upcoming Board of Governors meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), pressing for further sanctions and isolation of Moscow in the nuclear sector.
