Today marks 26 years since the massacre of civilians in Skenderaj, one of the many atrocities committed by Serbian forces during the Kosovo war. On March 20, 1999, following the withdrawal of international OSCE monitors, Serbian forces plundered and terrorized the local population, separating men from women and executing them near the Pishat area.
Former Skenderaj Mayor Bekim Jashari recalled that Serbian paramilitary units, dressed in white coats and black masks, carried out the mass killings and arrests.
“Some were executed in their homes, while others were taken away and never seen again. Their sacrifice stands as proof of the genocide committed by Serbia in Kosovo. Honor to those who fell for Kosovo’s freedom,” Jashari wrote.
On that tragic day, eight Albanians were executed at Te Pishat, while 29 others were either killed or forcibly disappeared in Skenderaj.
