The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, agreed with the opinion of Gerald Knaus, chairman of the European Initiative for Stability (ESI), who called the realization of the Association in the current conditions as impossible.

Knaus stated that the desire of the Serbian municipalities to realize it is lacking, while Prime Minister Kurti said that for Knaus, he starts from the principle of democracy.

Kurti said that you cannot impose the association on the municipalities, posing the question of what if the municipalities do not want it.

“Knaus starts from the democratic principle that democracy comes from below. You cannot impose the association on the municipalities. What if the municipalities do not want the association? So, his opinion is very sound, but their opinion (of the Serbian minority, ed.) is still unknown. So, he is right in this aspect, but we are dealing with all these. I believe that the Foreign Ministers of the member countries of the Council of Europe in Kosovo have a partner that does not only aim to benefit from the Council of Europe, but to contribute. Because the rule of law, human rights, democracy in Kosovo are not only the best in the region, but also better than in some member countries of the Council of Europe”, said Kurti in an interview for DW.

Kurti further thanked the German MPs who helped Kosovo for Kosovo’s membership in the Council of Europe.

“I have to thank the German MPs who have helped us so much and worked unstintingly and unreservedly, and in particular I would have emphasized Frank Schwabe and Knut Abraham, who gave a speech at the session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on 16 april But this great support for the Republic of Kosovo with 131 votes for, compared to 29 against, 82 percent in support of our country, should also be reflected in the Council of Ministers. Therefore, we are working so that even Germany in the Council of Ministers reflects its positive will to others. We are helping Germany to help us and in this way Kosovo becomes the 47th member of the Council of Europe”, he said.
