Acting President Albulena Haxhiu has officially authorized the deployment of the Kosovo Security Force (KSF) to Gaza, following a landmark approval by the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo. The KSF will join the International Stabilization Force (ISF), a multi-national peacekeeping initiative aimed at maintaining order and supporting humanitarian efforts in the region.
The decision marks a significant pivot for the young Balkan nation, transitioning from a historic consumer of international security to an active contributor to global stability.
A Commitment to International Peace
In an official statement shared on Monday, Acting President Haxhiu emphasized that the deployment reflects Kosovo’s maturity and its responsibility toward the international order.
“Today, I authorized the deployment of the Kosovo Security Force to an international peacekeeping operation as part of the International Stabilization Force in Gaza,” Haxhiu stated. “This decision reflects a Kosovo that understands security as an obligation to its citizens and a responsibility toward international peace.”
Haxhiu highlighted the KSF’s transition into a professional force capable of operating alongside strategic global partners. She noted that participating in such high-stakes missions proves the statehood and professional readiness of Kosovo’s institutions.
Strategic Partnership and Mission Scope
The KSF contingent is expected to serve alongside allies including the United States, Albania, and other international partners. While the exact number of personnel has not been finalized, the mission is expected to focus on:
- Demining and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD): Utilizing KSF’s highly-rated specialized units.
- Humanitarian Support: Assisting in the delivery of aid and medical services to the civilian population.
- Security Assistance: Monitoring ceasefires and stabilizing designated zones.
From Security Consumer to Provider
The move has been hailed by defense officials as a milestone. Defense Minister Ejup Maqedonci previously noted that this engagement demonstrates that Kosovo is a “reliable and responsible partner.”
The deployment comes at a time when Kosovo is seeking to further its integration into Euro-Atlantic structures. By sending troops to Gaza, Prishtina aims to solidify its standing as a security “exporter” and a proactive member of the global community.
