The ongoing special session of the Serbian National Assembly erupted into a high-stakes rhetorical battle on Tuesday night, June 23, 2026, exposing the ruling regime’s unyielding protection of internationally wanted figures.

The exchange reached a boiling point when Milenko Jovanov, the head of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) parliamentary group, launched a blistering attack against opposition MP Miroslav Aleksić (People’s Movement of Serbia). In a fierce defense, Jovanov explicitly branded Milan Radoičić—the sanctioned former politician who spearheaded the deadly 2023 Banjska attack—as a national hero.

Protecting the Orchestrator of the Banjska Attack

The confrontation highlights a deep domestic fault line. Globally, Milan Radoičić is recognized as the leader of the armed group responsible for the September 2023 Banjska standoff, which resulted in the death of a Kosovo police officer and three Serb gunmen, sparking intense international condemnation and Interpol notices.

Despite the gravity of the event, the ruling party under President Aleksandar Vučić continues to deflect all institutional responsibility for Banjska. Instead, the state apparatus has weaponized Radoičić’s status: anyone in Serbia who opposes or questions Radoičić is immediately targeted, labeled a traitor, and treated as an enemy of the ruling SNS party.

Jovanov’s Retaliation: “He Can’t Go Home, You Stroll Freely”

The clash began when Aleksić directly accused Radoičić and local criminal structures of contributing to the systemic vulnerability of the Serb population. Taking the podium, Jovanov delivered a fiery rebuke, explicitly framing Radoičić’s inability to travel due to international warrants as a badge of honor, while painting the opposition’s legal travel as collusion with Pristina.

Milenko Jovanov in the Assembly: ““Milan Radoičić is a Serbian hero who stood up and resisted. Everything he acquired, he acquired before politics, and he could live anywhere in the world—yet he chose to live with his people in Kosovo. Unlike you, who stroll around down there with Kurti’s henchmen, he is not allowed to cross that administrative line because his very life would be in immediate danger. That is the key difference between the two of you.””

Coordinated State Defense Relies on Deflection

Following the live parliamentary exchange, Petar Petković, the Director of the Office for Kosovo, rapidly reinforced the ruling party’s narrative via an official statement on his X (formerly Twitter) platform.

Petković heavily criticized Aleksić for breaking domestic ranks and questioning Radoičić, directly grouping the opposition leader with local politicians who cooperate with international frameworks:

““It is a miserable and shameful accusation to claim that Radoičić is responsible for the terror over Serbs, rather than Kurti! Aleksić needs to learn once and for all that a Serbian patriot does not expel his own people, but fights for them with heart and soul—something neither Aleksić nor [Nenad] Rašić will ever understand.””

By doubling down on Radoičić’s “hero” status and entirely avoiding accountability for the Banjska escalation, the Vučić administration has signaled to international observers that it remains completely aligned with the architects of the 2023 violence, using the conflict as a primary tool to crush internal political dissent.
