Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has congratulated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Ukraine’s Independence Day, expressing wishes for peace and the country’s recovery while reaffirming Serbia’s stated respect for Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
In his letter to Zelensky, Vučić emphasized that Serbia respects the United Nations Charter and, in accordance with its principles, Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
“Serbia respects the United Nations Charter and, in accordance with it, the territorial integrity of Ukraine,” Vučić said in the letter.
The Serbian president also said that Belgrade would continue providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Ukraine.
Zelensky publicly thanked Vučić for the message, specifically highlighting Serbia’s position on Ukraine’s territorial integrity and its commitment to the principles of the UN Charter.
“I appreciate Serbia’s support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine and its commitment to the principles of the UN Charter. I am grateful to Serbia and the Serbian people for their humanitarian support for Ukraine during this difficult time,” Zelensky wrote.
Vučić’s statement comes as Serbia continues to maintain close political and economic ties with Russia while simultaneously pursuing membership in the European Union.
Belgrade has maintained its formal position supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity and has provided humanitarian assistance to Kyiv, while stopping short of joining Western sanctions against Moscow.
The exchange between Vučić and Zelensky underscores Serbia’s continued effort to balance its relations with Russia and Ukraine while maintaining its stated strategic objective of advancing toward EU membership.
