Kosovo’s Minister of Justice, Donika Gërvalla, announced that the Kosovo Government has approved in principle an initiative for Kosovo to accede to the Inter-American Convention on Serving Criminal Sentences Abroad.
Gërvalla said the initiative aims to strengthen international legal cooperation in criminal matters, particularly regarding the transfer of convicted persons.
According to Gërvalla, accession to the Convention would allow convicted individuals to serve their sentences in their country of origin, in accordance with international standards and respect for fundamental human rights.
“The purpose of this Convention is to further strengthen international legal cooperation in the field of transferring convicted persons,” Gërvalla said.
She noted that accession would expand Kosovo’s legal cooperation, particularly with Latin American countries, while enabling convicted persons to serve their sentences closer to their families and communities, which could support their rehabilitation and reintegration.
The accession is included as one of the measures under the Ministry of Justice’s Institutional Plan for 2026–2028 in the area of international legal cooperation.
