Several protesters briefly prevented lawmakers from the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) from leaving the Kosovo Assembly through a rear entrance on Monday, as demonstrators gathered to demand approval of proposed amendments to the law governing the Specialist Chambers.
The protesters reacted angrily after seeing LDK lawmakers attempting to leave the Assembly building. LDK MPs did not participate in the vote on the proposed amendments.
Police intervened after several protesters attempted to approach the rear Assembly entrance.
“Go and vote for the law. Go back inside! Go inside, you monkeys,” one protester was heard shouting, according to video published by Demos.
Other insults were also heard during the confrontation. As the situation unfolded, the lawmakers who had attempted to leave closed the Assembly door behind them.
The demonstration was held amid ongoing debate over proposed amendments to the Law on Specialist Chambers and the Specialist Prosecutor’s Office.
