The United States has proposed unfreezing some Russian sovereign assets held in Europe and transferring them to a financial mechanism under Washington’s supervision, in an effort to revive peace negotiations over Russia’s war in Ukraine, the Financial Times reported.
The newspaper, citing sources familiar with the discussions, said the proposal was discussed at a meeting in Miami attended by US and Ukrainian negotiators, as well as representatives from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the European Union and NATO.
European delegates reportedly opposed the US proposal.
The initiative comes as diplomatic efforts to end the war continue alongside ongoing fighting and Russian attacks across Ukraine. The discussions over frozen Russian assets form part of broader efforts to explore possible arrangements for a peace agreement.
Meanwhile, Russian overnight attacks killed three people in the Ukrainian city of Kropyvnytskyi, according to the report.
Despite ongoing diplomatic contacts and discussions about a potential settlement, continued bombardments remain a threat to civilians and add to Ukraine’s security challenges.
