US Congressman Joe Wilson has called for free and fair elections in Serbia, accusing President Aleksandar Vučić’s government of attempting to manipulate the electoral process.
In a post on the social media platform X, Wilson welcomed a statement by seven US senators — Jeanne Shaheen, Roger Wicker, Dick Durbin, Chuck Grassley, Chris Murphy, Joni Ernst and Thom Tillis — urging Serbian authorities to ensure a level playing field for all political parties and citizens ahead of the elections scheduled for October 25.
“Vučić’s regime is aggressively trying to manipulate the elections, using every dirty trick possible,” Wilson wrote.
He said Serbian citizens deserve free and fair elections and called for the adoption of the proposed SRBIJA Act, legislation he says is relevant to addressing concerns surrounding Serbia’s electoral process.
The statements come amid concerns expressed by US officials over democratic standards and electoral conditions in Serbia, with calls for authorities to ensure that all political parties and citizens have equal opportunities to participate in the vote.
