Member of the European Parliament, David McAllister, has been re-elected to the position of president of the European Parliament’s Foreign Policy Committee.
McAllister, who was the only candidate for the post, was unanimously elected on July 23.
After the re-election, he said that the European legislators are starting their mandate at a time of growing geopolitical tensions, adding that he will continue to emphasize the importance of the close neighborhood and partnership with the Western Balkan states.
“We must maintain strong transatlantic relations regardless of who is in the White House after January. We must restrain aggressive Russia and further increase humanitarian, economic, financial and military support for Ukraine and support its path to peace and membership in the European Union and NATO. At the same time, we will continue to highlight our close neighborhood and our partners in the Western Balkans,” he said.
Last week, Roberta Metsola was re-elected as President of the European Parliament for a term of two and a half years.
This is the tenth composition of the European Parliament, which has 720 seats or 15 more than the previous composition.
Fifty-four percent are young deputies and 39 percent of the composition of the EP are women./REL
