The UN has condemned the Israeli government’s decision to bar its Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, from entering the country.
Yesterday, Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, declared the UN chief a persona non grata, accusing him of being an “anti-Israel secretary-general who supports terrorists.”
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric later told reporters that Katz’s statement was “another attack on UN staff that we have seen from the Israeli government.”
Dujarric emphasized that the UN chief has repeatedly condemned the attacks and sexual violence by Hamas and noted that the UN remains engaged with Israel “at operational levels and other levels.”
