Hurricane Milton, the strongest in a century, has struck Florida.

Although it weakened from Category 5 to Category 2 just before reaching the shores of Florida, the hurricane left a trail of destruction in its wake. Over a million people were evacuated.

Tampa International Airport recorded sustained winds of 93 km/h, with gusts reaching 150 km/h.

Emergency services in Tampa County, Florida, have been temporarily suspended until it is safe to return to the field.

“We had to stop all services because it is too dangerous to send an ambulance out on the roads under these conditions,” said Tampa Fire Chief Barbara Tripp to CNN.

Several people are believed to have died due to a tornado that struck St. Lucie as Hurricane Milton approached.
