The Kosovo Security Council held an emergency meeting early this morning following an explosion at the Ibër-Lepenc water canal, which provides water to several cities and supplies cooling for Kosovo Energy Corporation power plants. The blast, which occurred in Zubin Potok, caused significant damage to the canal.
In response, the Kosovo Government has increased security measures around critical infrastructure, including bridges, substations, and water systems. The Kosovo Police and Kosovo Security Force (KSF) have been deployed to safeguard these assets. Authorities are also coordinating with international partners to prevent further attacks.
Prime Minister Albin Kurti condemned the attack, calling it an attempt to destabilize Kosovo. “We will not tolerate acts that threaten our peace and democratic functioning,” he stated. Kurti urged the international community to denounce the attack, which caused severe damage.
The Kosovo Police has classified the explosion as a terrorist act and is working with international agencies to investigate the perpetrators. Initial findings suggest the attack was deliberate and executed with explosives.
In response to the disruption of water and energy supplies, Minister of Economy Artane Rizvanolli confirmed that temporary measures have been put in place to ensure continued service, including the installation of emergency pipes for cooling Kosovo B Thermal Power Plant.
International condemnation of the attack has been swift, with both the U.S. and EU offering support in the investigation. President Vjosa Osmani urged calm as the situation is being managed.
