A ship carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip was attacked by drones in international waters of the Mediterranean Sea, near Malta.
The incident occurred early Thursday morning, according to the international organization The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which confirmed the news via a statement.
“The drone attack appears to have specifically targeted the ship’s generator, and now the vessel is at risk of sinking along with 30 international human rights activists on board,” the NGO wrote in a social media post, attaching videos showing flames on one of the ships.
It remains unclear who is behind the attack, and there are no reported injuries. Immediately after the strike, an SOS signal was issued, and according to the NGO, Cyprus responded by dispatching a rescue ship.
This vessel was part of an international effort to deliver aid to Gaza residents, where the humanitarian situation has severely worsened due to the Israeli blockade.
Israel has blocked aid entry into the Hamas-controlled territory in an effort to force the militant group to demilitarize and release the Israeli hostages it is holding.
However, Hamas has rejected demilitarization demands, and the situation on the ground remains extremely tense.
