Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday evening in Rome, where the two leaders discussed the latest developments in the ongoing war in Ukraine. The conversation took place following recent talks between Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Istanbul, according to Swiss broadcaster RTS, as cited by Albinfo.ch.

During the bilateral meeting in the Italian capital, the focus was on achieving a lasting ceasefire. President Zelensky highlighted on his official Telegram channel that urgent humanitarian issues were also addressed, including mine clearance, school safety, and bomb shelter infrastructure for civilians.

President Keller-Sutter reiterated Switzerland’s offer to act as a mediator and supporter in international efforts to secure peace in the region.

In addition to his meeting with the Swiss president, Zelensky also held talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, where discussions centered on missile and drone attacks and Ukraine’s critical need for enhanced air defense systems.

These diplomatic engagements were held on the sidelines of the inauguration event for Pope Leo XIV, which will officially take place Sunday at the Vatican.

In a related development, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he is scheduled to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday. Trump said the conversation would focus on the possibility of a ceasefire and an end to the war in Ukraine, expressing optimism that it could be “a productive day” and that the violent conflict might soon be over.
