U.S. President Donald Trump has called Russia’s expulsion from the Group of Seven (G7) a “major mistake,” suggesting that Moscow’s participation might have prevented the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, reports Rks News.

Speaking during the G7 Summit in Canada, Trump proposed that President Vladimir Putin could serve as a mediator in efforts to de-escalate the conflict between Israel and Iran. He described Putin as a potentially “credible intermediary” capable of playing a constructive role in reducing tensions in the Middle East.

Although Trump did not formally call for Russia’s readmission to the G7, his remarks signal a significant departure from the stance of other Western leaders.

The proposal was met with skepticism, particularly from French President Emmanuel Macron, who rejected the idea. Macron cited Russia’s aggression in Ukraine as justification for excluding Moscow from any international peacekeeping efforts.
