The outgoing German Ambassador to Kosovo, Jörn Rohde, has urged the country to form a new government as soon as possible following the February 9 national elections, warning that political delays could jeopardize Kosovo’s path toward European integration.
Speaking to Klan Kosova, Rohde stressed that without a functioning government, Kosovo risks missing key opportunities, including its much-anticipated membership in the Council of Europe.
“Germany is a strong partner of the Western Balkans. We launched the Berlin Process, supported visa liberalization, and backed Kosovo’s membership in the Council of Europe. We want to see you in the European Union as soon as possible. But without a government, you risk missing the bus,” Rohde cautioned.
He noted that while Albania and Montenegro have recently opened new EU accession chapters, Kosovo risks falling behind. “You are in competition for membership. Albania, Montenegro, and North Macedonia have all faced delays for different reasons. Serbia applied in 2014 and for years did not open a single chapter. If you don’t do your homework, there will be consequences,” he added.
Rohde also warned that Kosovo could lose access to EU funds if the Assembly does not resume its work:
“Simply put, if the money doesn’t arrive, it’s because the Parliament isn’t working. There is a risk these funds could be lost if this situation continues for too long.”
The German diplomat’s remarks come at a time when Kosovo faces increasing pressure to accelerate reforms and prove political stability in order to advance toward Council of Europe and EU integration.
